About The ALVMA. The present association was formed in 1907, in Auburn, Alabama. Current membership of the ALVMA is about 750, or 75% of all the veterinarians in Alabama. It is nationally recognized as one of the most active and effective state veterinary associations.

The Purposes of the ALVMA:

  • To advance the art and science of veterinary medicine
  • To promote a cooperative spirit among veterinarians
  • To maintain high standards of professional qualifications through continual educational opportunities
  • To increase public awareness of the importance of veterinarians in animal health and disease control
  • To promote and support sound legislation as it affects veterinarians
  • To promote and encourage responsibility with pet ownership.

  • ALVMA members have many of the same needs, concerns and interests as you do. You will enjoy meeting and knowing these individuals, many of whom will become your trusted friends.
  • Alabama Veterinarian - a quarterly newsletter designed to keep Alabama veterinarians informed of all activities of the Association and other topics useful to their practice.
  • Maintains constant surveillance of legislative activity in Montgomery.   We are a highly respected profession, as such our advice and suggestions to legislators, regulatory agencies, etc. are always well received.
  • Disaster assistance for veterinarians or their families through a Veterinarians Aid Trust Fund.
  • Provides direct and informed liaison for veterinarians with county and state health department officials.
  • Increase public awareness of and works to improve the public's image of veterinarians, their practices, and their education.
  • Sponsors state-wide rabies, heartworm and other animal disease awareness programs through radio, TV, and newspapers. Supplies displays for county fairs and public schools to promote veterinary medicine, and to inform about diseases of importance.
  • Provides nominations to the Governor from which members of the State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners are appointed.
  • Actively advises and assists schools who are educating Veterinary Technologists, especially concerning curricula and training.
  • Professional associations offer prime opportunities to share and receive the benefits of the creativity of peers. Many new and valuable ideas sprout from interactions between individual members.
